Alzheimer's Association-Greater Illinois Chapter
Free Comfort Care Guide
The Alzheimer's Association-Greater Illinois chapter is offering a free online resource, Encouraging Comfort Care: A Guide for Families of People with Dementia Living in Care Facilities. This 21-page booklet provides useful information to families and staff of long-term care facilities about Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, particularly care issues related to the late and final stages.
For families, this guide will enable them to make informed choices about a variety of medical decisions they may face on behalf of loved ones with dementia living in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other types of care facilities. It will also equip families to ask good questions aimed at obtaining the best care for their loved ones, including a handy checklist of comfort care measures to be discussed with staff members of care facilities.
For staff members of long-term care facilities, the guide will serve as an important tool for those who wish to educate families and assist them in care planning. Individuals and organizations are encouraged to disseminate this booklet in electronic and print formats.
The Encouraging Comfort Care guide was made possible through a grant from The Retirement Research Foundation and is available at: http://www.alzheimers-illinois.org/pti/comfort_care_guide.asp.

New Resource Bridges Hospice & Palliative Care and Adult Day Services
Enhancing Community-Based Options for End of Life Care was funded by the Retirement Research Foundation to bridge the gap between adult day services and hospice and palliative care - two vital community-based services. This initiative helps adult day services personnel and hospice and palliative care personnel across the country better understand each others' roles and integrate -- from a clerical and programmatic standpoint -- to better care for people at the end of their lives.
The leadership, training, policy recommendations, tools, and materials developed through this initiative pave the way to capacity building and collaboration among adult day and hospice organizations, allowing adult day service providers to offer more comprehensive services for people with life limiting illnesses and their families -- promoting dignity and choice for millions of families across the country.

Culture change and person-directed care receives national attention in
US News & World Report and on MSN online!
The first article is in US News & World Report and is titled "These Nursing Homes Care about their Elderly Charges." It will appear in the February issue and is slated to hit newsstands on February 2nd. The second article is titled "America's Best Nursing Homes." and is currently on MSN online.
In our ongoing effort to educate consumers and caregivers, these articles represent an enormous opportunity to share the real possibilities of culture change and person-directed care.
Please take a moment to read both articles, and make sure to pass them on to a friend, so that the good news that culture change is gaining momentum can be shared!

National Institute on Aging Shaping Long-Term Care in America Project
Brown University Center for Gerontology and Healthcare Reseach
www.LTCfocUS.org
A new long-term care research and policy website, www.LTCfocUS.org, was recently launched. The website is sponsored by the National Institute on Aging Shaping Long-Term Care in America project housed at the Brown University Center for Gerontology and Healthcare Research. LTCfocUS.org is an exciting new resource for long-term care researchers and policy analysts because users can interact with the website in two ways: 1) by creating interactive maps and tables and, 2) by downloading all data available on the site.
LTCfocUS.org incorporates professional and graphically sophisticated maps, tables, and other visualizations of data related to nursing home care in the US. It provides users with research abstracts and publications and allows users to create linked maps to gather information about states, counties, or individual nursing homes. All data provided on the website are also available to download.
The website provides data gathered from existing federal sources including Medicare reimbursement claims, Online Survey Certification and Reporting (OSCAR) data, Minimum Data Set (MDS) data, as well as their surveys of state Medicaid policies. The goal of the website is to allow researchers to trace clear relationships between state policies and local market forces and the quality of long-term care. olicymakers will also be able to use the information to craft state and local guidelines that promote high-quality, cost-effective, equitable care to older Americans.

Midwest Academy, Chicago, Illinois
2010 Training Dates
"Organizing for Social Change"
The Midwest Academy offers a five day, residential, comprehensive "Organizing for Social Change" training throughout the country. Participants come from a wide variety of organizations. Most are working on specific issue campaigns and building powerful, progressive organizations. The training helps them to be more strategic in their fight for social, economic, racial and environmental justice.
There are different methods of organizing or ways of making social change, and all have their uses. Midwest Academy uses and teaches the "Direct Action Organizing" concept. Direct Action Organizing is based on the power of people to take collective action on their own behalf. The point is not that one approach is better than others. In fact, often many kinds of organizing are needed, but the Midwest Academy focuses on Direct Action Organizing.

"Supervisors of Organizers" Workshop
If you have good staff who do fine work, and you know that you can get them up to the next level but it just hasn't happened yet, then this workshop will be helpful. Why is it that some organizers seem to catch on naturally while others don't? Is it genetic or somewhere along the line was there a difference in the supervision they received? This workshop gives supervisors a chance to step back from the missing time sheets and meetings on the run in order to discuss supervision as the major and most consistent form of training that their organizers receive.
Chicago, December 1-3
